Statement Analysis PDF Print E-mail

ImageStatement analysis is a technique that studies the verbal statements of people. When people have information they do not want to share, they will often be deceptive in their statements. They will give more information than they realize.

This technique can help get more information from a statement by understanding what a person is actually saying.Statements are scrutinized on their content.

Examples of the information analysed:

  • • What verbs is the person using
    • Order of events
    • Time references
    • Pronouns
    • Is he/she answering the questions, etc.

This technique is mainly used when:

  • • High number of suspects
    • Examine suspects’ deception degree
    • Analyse an interviewee

When the number of suspects is too high. (All the possible suspects are asked to write a statement of their activity during the time of the crime). Analysing these written statements can help trim down the number of suspects in a case, which then will be further investigated.

A taped interview can be reviewed by a professional in statement analysis to evaluate the degree of deception of the interviewee.
